Hemp & Avocado Salad

I saw this recipe on the back of the hemp hearts package. I have been adding hemp hearts to my breakfast cereal for quite a while now but never looked at the package back. The salad sounded delicious to me, so I decided to make it.

The hemp hearts are the stars in this salad. As a readers may have ambiguous thoughts when you read hemp. Understandable. I had doubtful thoughts when I first saw the hemp hearts in the store, such as ‘does this contain cannabis (marijuana),’ and ‘do I get “high” when I eat hemp?’ All legitimate thoughts and questions. To get right to the point, hemp seeds, often referred to hemp hearts, are indeed the seeds of the Cannabis plant. They are from the same species as marijuana but a different variety (Healthline.com, ‘6 Evidence-Based Health Benefits of Hemp Seeds’, Sept. 2018) but no, you won’t feel ‘high’ after eating those hemp hearts in your salad. The hemp hearts that you can buy at Costco in the grocery aile, contain only trace amounts of THC, the psychoactive compound in marijuana. According to the article in Healthline.com by Adda Bjarnadottir, MS, hemp seeds are ‘exceptionally nutritious and rich in healthy fats, protein, omega-3, omega-6, Vitamin E, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, calcium, iron, and zinc.’

Hemp seeds (hearts) can be consumed raw, cooked, or roasted. They have a mild and nutty flavor. I just ate my salad. It was very delicious with the mixed greens – some spicy, others buttery in flavor, the tangy radish slivers, the juicy grape tomatoes, and the creamy avocado chunks. The red onion slivers added just the right amount of sharpness to this salad. What a rich combination of textures and flavors!

Ingredients:

  • 6 cups mixed greens
  • 4 radishes, slivered
  • 1/3 cup red onion, slivered
  • 1 cup grape tomatoes
  • 1 avocado, peeled, pitted, and cut into chunks
  • 3 tbsp hemp hearts
  • 2 tbsp red wine vinegar or lemon juice
  • 1 tsp extra virgin cold-pressed olive oil (you don’t need much as the avocado and the hemp seeds contains fats)
  • Kosher salt, to taste

Instructions:

  1. Combine the mixed greens, onion, tomatoes, radishes, red wine vinegar, and salt.
  2. Incorporate the avocado carefully into your salad.
  3. Sprinkle the hemp seeds all over your salad.
